Are Senior Citizen Train Ticket Discounts Returning? Here’s What You Need to Know
For decades, discounted train fares provided relief to elderly passengers all over India. These cutbacks made it easier and cheaper for seniors to travel. However, as of March 2020, this important benefit was suspended during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2004, a special concession scheme was introduced by Indian Railways to provide ease to older passengers travelling by rail. The scheme offered:
- A fifty percent discount fare for women aged 58 and above
- 40% discount for men 60 years and older
These advantages were applicable to several trains, which included Mail, Express, Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto. One example which led to a woman travelling on the Rajdhani Express First AC ₹4000 ticket, paid only ₹2000. For men, it arrived at ₹2400. This scheme was vital for retirees and those on low pensions.

Why Was the Scheme of Senior Citizen Train Ticket Discounts Suspended?
