With over one crore government staff & pensioners awaiting announcement for the 8th Pay Commission, all eyes are set on January 2025. The new pay commission is likely to benefit millions of government employees.
On January 2025, a formal announcement for formation of 8th Pay Commission was made by the central government. In conjunction with this announcement there have been several updates and news bulletins regarding the new pay scale. One of the biggest change which is expected is the fusion of Dearness Allowance (DA) and the basic salary. The revision is expected to have a big impact on the take-home pay and pension of government employees as the DA will be merged with the base salary.
Key Changes Under the 8th Pay Commission April 2025
The strategy implemented by the 7th Pay Commission to merge the DA with the basic salary is probably to be adopted by the 8th Pay Commission as well. This step is similar to that of 7th Pay Commission in consideration to the fitment factor step with the basis of DA was added to the basic pay before the salary structure was finalized. In parallel, the 8th Pay Commission will adjust government salaries and pensions by including the DA in their basic pay.

While the announcement of the Commission was made in January 2025, the government has yet to submit a formal appointment of the members of the Commission. So, the recommendations for a salary and pension revision will likely come by the end of 2025 or early 2026.” The commission’s report will be finalized by the government and the new pay scale recommended will be implemented.
Projected Salary Increases
According to the current structure, if the DA of 50 percent is implemented, then common employees of the government with a minimum basic salary of ₹18,000- will now get an increase of salary to ₹27,900. The critical base salary has been enhanced up to higher amounts in past years under this structure of the fitment factor.
With a fitment factor of 1.92, the salary can go up to ₹53,568. But if that factor is raised to 2.57, it can go up to ₹71,703. With the highest anticipated fitment factor of 2.86, the salary can go up to ₹79,794. This implies that employees working with a base salary of ₹18,000 currently will get a salary between ₹53,000 and ₹79,000 after the 8th Pay Commission pay revision, as per the final recommendations.
What’s Happened Since January?
The government has not issued any significant updates since the January 2025 announcement. The formation of the commission has been confirmed, but the names of the panel members are still awaited. 8th Pay Commission is likely to be introduced by January 2026, implementation around mid-2026, as per various media reports.
